"Before the pandemic I used to play with my friends, we used to go to cinema with my mom and we used to bike with my dad. We used to be very active. When the pandemic started I felt confused and sad. Suddenly everything stopped and we closed at home... I started to talk online with all the people I love. That made me feel closer to them. Also I dedicated more time to learn foreign languages in Duolingo. After school I play with my dog in the garden and videogames with my father. " |
CALL FOR ENTRIES
ENTRY SUBMISSION DEADLINE: Ongoing TIMELINE: July 24, 2020 - July 24, 2021 |
BACKGROUND:
American Rupite, a non-profit organization in New York, United States, has received a letter from one of our young people asking us to help and support her in promoting and administering the Music for Hope program.
Here is Andrea’s letter to us:
“Hello friends at American Rupite,
In these times of self-isolation, I feel the need to speak up for my generation. As young people, we want to go out into the real world and make our mark. We want to experience everything that we possibly can, both good and reckless. We want to make a difference so that the world can be a better place. Sadly, physical distancing has created a barrier between us and our dreams. Many of us feel dispirited and lost knowing that our journeys have come to a halt. Without hope and without a sense of togetherness, how can we find the power to advocate prosperous change?
In order to rediscover this power that now seems so far out of our reach, I feel we must find a solution for the cause of our discouragement: our loss of connection to others. Granted, we have digital connection at our disposal, but is that, and that alone, meaningful enough? Perhaps not, but what if we used technology to bring our hope back? To help others rediscover their purpose? To share what we are feeling? To show young people how simple yet powerful the expression of empathy for others can be?
I would like to invite young people to help create a powerful message of togetherness by sharing their story and favorite music. Why music? Because, through music, we can connect to each other in a way far beyond words. By sharing what we are feeling and exchanging the songs, traditions, and thoughts that make each of us want to get up in the morning, we can collectively find new energy for the future in the changed world we live in. And maybe, just maybe, have ourselves a little dance in our living rooms while passionately mumbling the words to a foreign song.”
